Meet Mike Granzow

Maybe you have spent years showing up for other people, whether that's your family, your community, your clients, or a cause you believe in, and now you are running on empty. Maybe life has not turned out the way you hoped, and you are carrying a disappointment you rarely say out loud. Maybe you keep running into the quiet, persistent feeling that you are not enough.

Or maybe something happened, once or over a long stretch of time, that taught your body the world is not safe. Now you find yourself on edge, easily triggered, disconnected from yourself, or feeling like things are slipping out of your control.

I help people work through life's challenges with compassion, practical tools, and deep respect for their lived experiences. Therapy with me is a real conversation. It is honest and grounded, and it is focused on what actually matters to you.

We don't live our lives in a vacuum. Many of the struggles people bring to therapy are shaped by the systems, communities, and environments around them. My work is grounded in that awareness, and in honoring each person's identity, culture, and individuality.

Call out:

You are the greatest expert on your own life. My job is to listen closely, ask good questions, and help you find a path toward wellness that you can actually sustain.

Who I Work With and How I Can Help

I work with children, teens, and adults ages eight to 65. I especially enjoy working with people who are contemplating change. They may not have every answer yet, but they know something needs to shift.

You may be:

  • Exhausted from giving so much of yourself in service of others

  • An activist, organizer, or advocate feeling the weight of the work

  • A man, or someone of any gender, wanting a space to explore emotions and behaviors you were never taught to talk about

  • Managing triggers after experiencing or witnessing danger to yourself or others

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or out of control

  • Disappointed in how things have turned out and unsure where to go from here

  • Questioning where your values came from and whether they still fit

  • Struggling with the feeling that you are not enough

My primary areas of focus include complex trauma and PTSD, identity exploration, and activist burnout. I also work with depression and anxiety, men's issues, burnout and stress management, and chronic disease management.

Our work may focus on noticing how stress shows up in your mind and body, recognizing negative self-talk, understanding the patterns behind your thoughts and actions, and reconnecting with the values that give your life meaning.

My Approach to Therapy

I believe in transparency. I want you to know what we are doing in session and why. Therapy should not feel like something being done to you. It is something we do together.

My work combines reflection, body-based awareness, and practical skills. We often start with your values: what matters to you, where those values came from, and whether your thoughts and actions are supporting them. From there, we have down-to-earth conversations about your choices and the obstacles standing between you and your wellness.

I tailor our work to you through goal-setting, sessions that are structured but flexible, and ongoing check-ins about what is working. I will regularly ask what you like, what helps, and what feels challenging because you should have a voice in your own therapy.

I also bring a decolonized perspective to my work. Identities are largely shaped by socially constructed systems, and those systems affect people very differently. I stay curious about how they may or may not influence your experience, without assuming I already know your story. I want our work to help loosen the grip of harmful systems on your life rather than reinforce them.

Therapeutic Approaches I May Use

Trauma-Informed Therapy

When we perceive danger, that perception affects us deeply. Whether it was a single frightening moment or years of living under stress, feeling unsafe changes us. In therapy, we explore those feelings carefully and work toward making everyday life feel more manageable.

Somatic Therapy

We experience the world through our minds and our bodies. In session, we pay attention to both. That might mean closing your eyes to check in with how your body feels, practicing breathing, or trying a short meditation. We explore how the sensations in your body interact with your mood and thoughts.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

We all think and act in patterned ways. Together, we look at your patterns, notice which ones are helping and which ones are getting in the way, and practice new ways of responding.

Person-Centered Therapy

You know your life better than anyone. Sometimes the most useful thing I can do is give you room to talk while I listen.

What Therapy With Me Feels Like

I am warm, and I use humor. I want you to feel comfortable, and I care about building a genuine relationship with you.

I will also challenge you. We will talk honestly about your choices, your patterns, and the things that are keeping you stuck, and we will do it at a pace that fits you. I am comfortable with silence when you need space to think, and I will offer questions when you are not sure where to begin.

You are in charge of your therapy. You do not have to arrive with the right words or a clear plan.

My Background and Experience

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in many roles: AmeriCorps VISTA, community organizer, counselor within the DCFS system, preschool teacher, nonprofit manager, and street medic. I also spent time working in the service industry.

These experiences taught me why my practice needs to be grounded in systemic awareness. They also taught me the importance of activism and of standing alongside people who are navigating difficult or unjust environments.

Throughout my career, I have worked with a wide range of people across genders, races, sexual orientations, classes, and cultures. I have had especially meaningful experiences supporting men, Black clients, and LGBTQIA+ clients. I have always been passionate about serving underserved and at-risk communities, both professionally and personally.

A Personal Note From Mike

It takes courage to reach out for support, so congratulations on taking that step. Whether or not you are sure what comes next, you matter, and you are allowed to ask for help.

When I am not in session, you can usually find me listening to music, out on a hiking trail, or gaming. I am also an activist, and I care deeply about my clients' progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't know what I want to talk about?

That is completely okay. Many people start therapy unsure of where to begin. I can offer questions to help us explore, and we can take our time figuring out what matters most to you.

What if I feel nervous or uncomfortable during a session?

You are in charge of the pace. We can explore discomfort a little at a time, pause when you need to, or shift direction. I will regularly check in on what is working for you and what is not.

Do I have to be an activist to work with you?

No. I enjoy working with activists and people experiencing burnout from serving others, but I work with people from all backgrounds. What matters most is that you are ready to explore what is going on and consider what might need to change.

What happens during our first session?

We will talk about what brought you to therapy, what you value, and what you hope will be different. I will explain how I work and why, so nothing about the process feels like a mystery.

How will I know whether we are a good fit?

Our consultation is a chance to talk about what you are looking for and how I work. A good sign is leaving that conversation feeling respected, comfortable, and curious about what we could explore together.

Ready to See Whether We're a Good Fit?

You don't need to have it all figured out, and you don't have to do this alone. Let's find out what healing, balance, and wellness look like for you.
